Make a note on your calendar: The AYBT event in Mount Pleasant, Mich. will be taking place the weekend of July 13th.

The event, which has traditionally taken place in June, was moved back a few weeks to give teams a great weekend just before Nationals.

This all girls tournament will be comprised of teams ranging in age from fourth through twelfth grade. Each team is guaranteed to play five games over two days.

Tournament leader Ray Kimball is in his sixth year as a director for AYBT, but his involvement with the organization goes back to its beginnings in the mid 1990s. He even got the chance to coach both his daughter and son when they played with AYBT.

Currently the head varsity girls’ basketball coach at Portland High School, said the reasons for participating with AYBT for so long are simple.

“I always liked the family atmosphere, the quality of the organization, and the competition,” said Kimball. “[AYBT] is a great program for player development. Every kid gets the opportunity to participate and feel good about competing in the game of basketball.”

For families visiting the Mount Pleasant area for the AYBT event, there are plenty of activities to do once the games are over.

The heart of the Isabella Indian Reservation, the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort, stands tall as a vacation destination for all of Michigan. The Soaring Eagle recently completed an indoor waterpark and hotel complex as well. If you’re interested in history, you can tour through the Ziibiwing center, which uses different kinds of media to detail the history of the Chippewa tribe throughout the years.
